Aquatreat
Jan Vandersypen is the visionary founder of Aquatreat, a Belgian company specializing in industrial water treatment. Established in 01976, Aquatreat was built on the vision of providing ecological and innovative solutions for water treatment, offering sustainable alternatives to the toxic chemicals commonly used at the time.
In 02013, we had the privilege of designing and delivering the new Aquatreat headquarters, which remains, to this day—10 years later—the chemical plant with the lowest carbon footprint in the world. Despite a decade of technological advancements, no other building has surpassed its sustainability achievements. The facility is also certified as a zero-emission site, meaning not a single drop of water flows into the sewer system. This groundbreaking project continues to set the global standard for sustainable industrial design.
Jan’s leadership has always been ahead of its time. Since 01979, he has planted 27,000 trees, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to ecological responsibility. Though initially met with skepticism and even ridicule, his pioneering ideas are now widely admired and respected—proof that true visionaries are simply ahead of their era.
Under Jan’s guidance, Aquatreat has grown into a leading player in sustainable water treatment, combining environmentally friendly processes with groundbreaking innovation. In January 02014, he passed the daily management to his daughter, Tinne Vandersypen, while remaining actively involved in product development and resource management.
Jan Vandersypen is not only a trailblazer in sustainability but also our very first true Yunatic—a dreamer and doer whose bold ideas inspire us to push boundaries and create a better world.
