Res. Zonnewijzer / kapel Bazel

In Bazel, along the Scheldt south of Antwerp, two projects illustrate YUGENING’s vision of respecting context, honoring heritage and creating spaces that foster well-being.

The chapel conversion transforms a place of worship into a warm family home, where contemporary living harmonizes with monumental architecture. The entrance hall retains its ecclesiastical grandeur, while a semi-open kitchen and generous living space connect with garden and light. Even with only the front and side façades preserved, the home’s organization highlights its historic qualities and allows the original windows to shine once again.

Nearby, a nine-unit residential complex draws inspiration from the confusion between Bazel and its Swiss namesake. Reinterpreting archetypal forms – the chalet, the dovecote, the garden shed – the design weaves together timber cladding, semi–gable roofs and articulated terraces. A tripartite composition, shifted along a north–south axis, maximizes daylight and integrates the building into its park setting.

Together, these projects show how YUGENING designs architecture that breathes with its surroundings: respectful of history, playful in context and always committed to creating environments that inspire and give back energy to their inhabitants.
